Prom Dress Giveaway Volunteer +

As in the past, a successful Prom Dress Giveaway requires hundreds of amazing volunteers. To sign up to volunteer at the 2025 Giveaway event, watch our website and email newsletter for details.

Donation Collection Team +

Members of this team will be emailed when donation pickups from our donation drop-off sites are needed in the Portland-metro area. If available, the volunteer will use his/her own car to drive to the business to pick up the donations and either deliver them to a Board member’s home or the Abby’s Closet Clubhouse (located near Bridgeport Village Mall).

SKILLS NEEDED: a valid driver’s license and an automobile

TIME FRAME: Ongoing

APPROX. # OF HOURS/MONTH: 2-4 Hours

PROCUREMENT COMMITTEE +

Members of this team assist with procuring silent auction or other items for the Holiday Tea (major fundraising event)and the Prom Dress Giveaway. They will reach out to potential donors via phone, email or letter and may be asked to pick up some donations. In addition, they will communicate with rest of volunteer team so there are no duplication of efforts.

SKILLS NEEDED: communication (verbal and written); some basic Excel.

TIME FRAME: Year-round

APPROX. # OF HOURS/MONTH: 5 (emailing and/or calling potential donors; may include an occasional committee meeting)

Dress Cleaning Crew +

Members of this committee will be contacted when there are dresses needing cleaning. Volunteers will use their own washing machine/dryer, spot-cleaner and detergent to clean soiled dresses. The dresses would be picked up/returned to the Abby’s Closet Clubhouse (located near the Bridgeport Village Mall) or other arrangements can be made.

SKILLS NEEDED: able to launder dresses

Dress Repair Crew +

Members of this committee will be contacted when there are dresses that need repairs or mending. Repairs may be done using a sewing machine or by hand. Types of mending may include: re-attaching hooks, eyes or sequins, repairing or replacing zippers, repairing a torn seam, etc. You can let us know what types of repairs you prefer to do. Volunteers will use their own sewing machine and thread, although Abby’s Closet can provide some sewing supplies. The dresses would be picked up/returned to the Abby’s Closet Clubhouse (located near the Bridgeport Village Mall) or other arrangements can be made.

SKILLS NEEDED: sewing or mending (all levels) and able to launder dresses

Sponsorship Committee +

This committee is tasked with developing a sponsorship program to fund the annual Abby's Closet Prom Dress Giveaway and major fundraising events. They will also develop and execute a plan for recruiting businesses, in-kind donations or individuals to be sponsors.

SKILLS NEEDED: Communication (written and verbal); basic Excel (to update a spreadsheet)

TIME FRAME: June - March

APPROX. # OF HOURS/MONTH: 5 hrs. (calling or emailing potential sponsors; may include occasional meetings)

Other Ways to Get Involved +

There are lots of ways you can help Abby’s Closet. Here are just a few ideas!

Organize a dress donation drive at your high school or college, sorority, church, business, neighborhood, social or service club, etc. Gather and collect dresses, shoes and accessory donations for Abby's Closet. Click here for a dress drive registration form.

Forward the latest newsletter on to family, friends and co-workers.

Encourage your bridal attendants to donate their dresses after the wedding.

Host a party and ask your guests to all bring dresses and/or accessories to donate.

At your next formal function, put a note on each table reminding the women to donate their dresses afterwards.

Add information about Abby’s Closet in your next community, church or business newsletter.

Invite a speaker from Abby’s Closet to come to your next meeting or event to talk about the organization.

Purchase formal dresses, wraps and purses at garage sales, re-sale and consignment shops, discount stores, etc.
