Carolyn Ngo, the 2017 Abby’s Closet scholarship winner, was awarded a check for $2000 before cutting the ribbon to open the 13th annual event at the Oregon Convention Center.
7525 beautiful gowns hung on the racks in all sizes, colors and styles just waiting for their chance to dance again. In addition, each young woman received one accessory to go with their dress.
By Sunday afternoon, 2,446 high school women went home with a prom gown. The remaining gowns were boxed up, stored and will be back at the Abby’s Closet Prom Gown Giveaway in 2018. A huge THANK YOU to Brides for a Cause our 2017 Presenting sponsor for helping to make the event a success!
Abby’s Closet is run by volunteers. The dedicated people who make up our Board of Directors, Student Advisory Board and our key volunteers set the vision and direction of the organization and provide the leadership to carry out the prom gown giveaway.
Over the course of the year, 500+ volunteers work to ensure young women’s prom dreams come true.
Thanks to the businesses who are our donation drop-off sites, the volunteers who helped pick up, sort, hang, tag, mend and clean donations, those who donated gowns, accessories and raffle prizes, those who organized and led dress donation drives at their businesses, schools and churches, the committee and contacts for the 214 high schools who helped publicize the event and those who made monetary and in-kind donations. This event could not happen without you. Be sure to see the LIST on our website.
A BIG thanks to all of the volunteers who helped over the weekend of the giveaway event. You were awesome and made the event very special for the young women!
Please mark your calendars for next year’s event taking place on April 7-8, 2018 once again at the Oregon Convention Center.

Some information about the Giveaway Event: The only requirement is that the students show a high school ID card. As students arrive, they are given a numbered ticket and told the approximate time they will be able to enter the Salon. The donated gowns are grouped in ‘Salons’ by size and color. Once in the Salon, there are plenty of adult volunteers to help them find the perfect gown. During the 2017 Giveaway, there were over 7,000 gowns to choose from. After a gown is selected, the guests are able to select an accessory item (ex. purse, wrap, jewelry).
